On 11 October 2026, Segen45 and NEUE INSEL in Essen are hosting ‘Machet jut!’ – an information and workshop day focusing on end-of-life planning, death and bereavement. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for information, discussion and very personal perspectives.

As part of the fair, there are also various opportunities to try things out for yourself, chat to people or get creative. That’s why interested children and young people are very welcome.

Who is authorised to make decisions on my behalf regarding my place of residence or medical care if I am no longer able to do so due to illness or an accident? Once I reach the age of majority, who are doctors permitted to inform about my medical condition? As an expression of your right to self-determination, you can set out your wishes in a lasting power of attorney and a living will.
Barbara Stulgies, a palliative care nurse and coordinator of an outpatient hospice service, explains the basics and specific aspects of this topic and will be happy to answer your specific questions.
Inheritance and leaving a legacy are issues that concern us all during our lifetimes. Should I draw up a will, or should I leave matters to the statutory order of succession? Can I bequeath specific items? Do I need an executor? Can I draw up a will myself? What do I need to bear in mind? How do I deal with larger estates? What can I do to ensure that peace prevails within my family even after my death, and that inheritance tax does not place too great a burden on my heirs? And how do I do it ‘properly’? Questions upon questions. And these are just a few.
Following the 20-minute talk, Ralf Bockstedte, a solicitor from Essen, will be more than happy to answer any questions from the audience as an expert in the field.
Caren Baesch is a funeral director and bereavement counsellor who specialises in individual, meaningful and personalised farewells. At her exhibition stand and in her short talk, she will demonstrate what modern, personalised funeral services can look like.
In this workshop, you can explore the themes of saying goodbye, grieving or remembering in a creative way.
After a brief group discussion, you will paint your own picture on the theme. Perhaps you’ll choose a personal saying or a quote that expresses a connection to someone who is dying or has passed away. Or perhaps you’d prefer to create a picture on the general theme of loss. We warmly welcome you and all your ideas!
At the end of the workshop, we’ll come together once more for a brief discussion about our pictures and the thoughts that arose during the painting process.
Canvases in various sizes (maximum 50×50 cm) and acrylic paints will be provided. Please wear clothes that can withstand paint splashes.
Participation in the workshop is by prior registration only. We also ask for a contribution towards materials of €10 (to be paid on the day).
Monika Hoffmann and Andrea Hündlings have been supporting people who are grieving at Kettwiger TrauerZeit for many years. With great empathy, they create spaces where grief can find its place. In their workshop, they invite participants to give creative expression to their memories and to discover new ways of staying connected to their loved ones.
At 4.00 pm, as part of the ‘Machet jut!’ initiative, a charity concert featuring Hanna Flieder and Niko Faust will take place. Jörg Steinkamp will be hosting the event. Admission is free. Half of the much-appreciated donations will go to the Children’s Palliative Care Network and half to Segen45’s funeral support work.

Hanna Flieder is taking part in the charity concert as a singer-songwriter and poetry artist. Through her musical and poetic contributions, she offers a personal perspective on farewells, memories and connection. She describes herself as follows: Hanna Flieder is a musician, poetry slammer, presenter and creative writer from Essen. At the heart of her work lies the belief that music and language can connect people, move them and open up new perspectives.
Niko Faust is a musician and songwriter who will be performing at the charity concert with songs that speak of farewells, comfort, hope and connection. Through his music, he is supporting the fundraising campaign in aid of the Essen Children’s Palliative Care Network and the funeral services provided by Segen45.

The best way to get there is by bike or on public transport. NEUE INSEL is situated directly on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, between BARcelona and the Steeler Freibad (Westfalenstraße 98, 45136 Essen). The ‘Essen am Ruhrwehr’ bus stop is practically on the doorstep. There are also parking facilities available directly at the venue.
