At a church wedding or marriage ceremony, your marriage or partnership is blessed. We celebrate your love and you promise to be there for one another – in good times and in difficult times. So that you are not alone in making this great promise, we ask God to bless your love. You can exchange rings, thereby showing: ‘We belong together.’ You can light wedding candles and ask for the fire of God’s love to burn within your love. For we believe that our human love for one another is a reflection of God’s great love for us as human beings.
Church members who are already married in a civil ceremony can, if they wish, receive a certificate for their family register and be officially entered into the church records.
However, we can also celebrate your blessed wedding without a marriage certificate, and it will be just as beautiful, for nothing is more divine than love!
Whether you’re queer or straight, old or young, newly in love or long-established – you as a couple, with your love story, your way of believing, living and celebrating, are what make the wedding a truly special and personal celebration.
If your wedding involves a union of different denominations, religions, cultures or languages, we will work with you to find the right solution. We also have multilingual colleagues in our team and can involve other clergy members. We do our utmost to ensure that no one is left out!
You can get married in a church, but you don’t have to. You can also hold a church ceremony outdoors: in a garden, by the River Ruhr, on the Essen Ferris wheel or on the ‘Weiße Flotte’… We’ll come along and bless you and your love – wherever you wish.
